Sylphy’s Power

————————-

The Assault Dragon, about the size of a three-story building, is scratching its feet in a charging position.
I ready my saw at its maximum size.
I don’t want to be thrown back, so I need to be careful and avoid its attack.

“Gooooor!”

With a massive roar, the Assault Dragon charges at incredible speed.
The charge of its massive body is even more powerful than I imagined, and my legs freeze even though I know I’ll be okay.
I force my body to move and dodge the Assault Dragon.

This is bad.
Just avoiding it is difficult enough, but the vibration from its massive body causes me to lose my footing.
In a clumsy stance, I barely manage to avoid it, and the Assault Dragon runs past, causing the ground to shake.
And because of its width, if I wasn’t at a higher level, I would have been crushed without being able to escape.

It’s a relief that it seems impossible for the Assault Dragon to make sudden turns.
Although it made a slight trajectory correction towards me, it is still possible to land an attack if I remain calm.

Ah, I should have dug a hole with the magic shovel.
If I dug a deep enough hole, it would have fallen in without being able to avoid it.
Hmm, but it’s difficult because of the slope.

…Huh? It can’t stop? It seems like it’s trying to brake with its feet, but since it charged down the slope of the volcano, it’s sliding and kicking up dust as it goes down to the bottom.

Ah, what should I do? I didn’t expect this turn of events.
Should I leave it and move on? After observing for a while, it finally stopped a few hundred meters away.
Oh, it’s coming back.
The Assault Dragon is running up the volcano, kicking up dirt and dust.

“Hey, Sylphy.
The Assault Dragon is an A-ranked dragon, right? It doesn’t seem to have high intelligence, why is that?” I ask.

“It’s a sub-dragon.
Although it’s classified as A-rank due to its massive body and robust physique, it doesn’t have that much intelligence.
If it had proper intelligence, it could even be classified as S-rank,” Sylphy replies.

It’s acting purely on instinct.
When we dealt with the zombie general, its intelligence caused me trouble, so this may actually be easier.
If it slowly approached with that massive body and attacked by stomping and biting, it would have been more troublesome.

So it’s a dragon that acts on instinct only… I guess most enemies can be defeated with charging attacks, so there’s no need to think too much about it.
I hold my saw in anticipation of the Assault Dragon, which is running up the slope from below, and observe it carefully.

As the Assault Dragon charges at me like before, I dodge and place the saw in front of its foreleg.
The Assault Dragon passes through without any resistance… Did it cut through?

The Assault Dragon, who had rushed by, lost balance and fell due to the chainsaw slicing through its leg.
Seeing blood spurting out of its front legs, it seemed that the chainsaw had hit its mark.

It’s hard to tell if it hit or not when you don’t feel any resistance.
But it looks like the chainsaw went in pretty deep, and the Assault Dragon is struggling on the ground…

“Hey, Sylphy, it’s thrashing around so much that I can’t get close.
What should I do?”

“It seems like it’s a specimen with little combat experience.
It’s in a panicked state because it’s surprised to have been injured.
If you get too close, you’ll get caught up in its thrashing.”

It seems that its skin is as tough as iron, so it’s unlikely that it can be easily injured.
But getting hit by a cheat magic chainsaw must have been surprising.
However… the current situation is more troublesome than a direct attack.

After thrashing around for a while, the Assault Dragon finally calms down and slowly tries to stand up.
This is the moment I go around and behind it and cut off its hind legs, causing it to fall once again.

It struggles again in pain, but a large amount of blood flows out from the completely severed leg, and its movements gradually become sluggish.

“Should we wait for it to bleed to death?”

We could probably finish it off now, but it’s dangerous because it might roll towards us.

“If we wait, we can defeat it, but the adventurers at the base of the mountain are also climbing up to investigate, and the Wyverns are making noise.
It’s better to defeat it and move to a different location.”

“I see.
Understood, I’ll go and finish it off.”

With the possibility of escape always in mind, I cautiously approached from behind and cut its neck to finish it off.
I quickly store the body and leave this area.

“That was quite tough.
I wasn’t seen by any of the adventurers, right?”

Without the cheat chainsaw, it would have been much harder, but it was definitely tough.
It took quite some time, and I was worried about the adventurers getting too close.

“If there was nothing ahead, they might have noticed, but with the terrain being so hilly, it’s probably okay.
Good job.”

“Thanks, everyone.”

It’s nice to be praised.
But it took too much time, so next time I’ll rely on the power of Bell and the others to defeat monsters quickly.

***

The cheat exploration tools are no match for them.
Although I was attacked by Assault Dragons and Wyverns several times, with the help of Bell and the others, they were easily defeated.

The Assault Dragon was easily toppled and pinned down.
The Wyverns lost their advantage of flight and were knocked to the ground.
I simply cut off the heads of the monsters that rolled in front of me, like an assembly line.

While collecting valuable items like Pepper that Sylphy pointed out, we reached the mountaintop and descended the stairs.
I´m finally going to meet a real dragon.

“Sylphy, it’s okay to leave the Fire Dragon to you, right?”

“Yes, no problem.
You can relax, Yuta.”

Despite the fact that our opponent is an S-rank monster, Sylphy says this without any hint of pressure.
Just how strong is Sylphy?

“Got it.
Should we go inside like this?”

“Yes, that’s fine.”

I feel a bit nervous, but I trust Sylphy and open the door to the boss’s room on the 50th floor.
I thought the door was too grand when I faced the Goblin, but if the opponent is a dragon, then it’s an appropriate level of grandeur.
As I cautiously peeked inside, my eyes met with the Fire Dragon.

I am transfixed by the golden shimmering eyes of the Fire Dragon.
As its imposing presence leaves me frozen, Sylphy taps me on the shoulder and urges me to enter the room.

Trembling, I step into the room, and the Fire Dragon opens its mouth, spewing flames.
Panic sets in as I try to dodge the attack, but my body doesn’t respond.
Completely scared, Sylphy steps in front of me.

“Don’t be so hasty,” she says.

As she speaks, the approaching flames are whisked away by the wind, dispersing effortlessly.

“And it´s finished,” she declares.

At Sylphy spoke those words, the Fire Dragon’s head fell to the ground.
In reality, the enormous head thunders to the ground, but it feels like it just topples off.
I have no idea what just happened.

Watching the blood spurt out like a fountain, I think to myself that it was a good decision not to rely too much on Sylphy.
If I had relied on her too much, the dungeon would have been too easy, or I would have become too arrogant and would have been abandoned.

My spine shivers as I think about that attack.
I had no idea what was going on, but Bell and the others knew what she had done, and they were praising and fawning over Sylphy.
I’m a little envious.

“Is it over?” I ask.

“Yes, it’s over,” Sylphy replies.

“Sylphy is too strong, isn’t she?”

“Well, I am a Great Spirit.”

“Hahaha, that’s right.
Well, I guess we shouldn’t rely on Sylphy too much.
Otherwise, we might become useless people.”

“Hehe, that’s good.
I’ll help you when it’s dangerous but try your best with Bell and the others.
It’s more fun for me that way.”

Sylphy smiles gently as if she likes my words.
This is it, I must not mistake Sylphy’s power for my own.
If I do, I’ll be abandoned in an instant.
I need to be careful.

I was treating Dyne somewhat carelessly, but she’s also a Great Spirit like Sylphy.
Wait, I felt something tingling?… I shouldn’t think about scary things.
Dyne is Dyne.

I approach the Fire Dragon’s corpse to observe it.
Shimmering red scales that sparkle.
It seems a bit smaller than the Assault Dragon, but it has wings and can probably fly.
Just looking at its eyes made me freeze, so its strength must have been on a completely different level.

Well, Sylphy’s power was on a completely different level too, so I ended up not understanding anything… By the way, don’t bosses in dungeons drop any treasure when defeated?

If it were any other boss, it might be a different story, but if you defeated an S-rank boss, it wouldn’t be strange if something came out.
Speaking of which, I haven’t found any treasure chests or anything along the way.

“Sylphy, are there no treasure chests?”

“I’ve heard they exist.
Come to think of it, I didn’t see any, so maybe someone else has taken them all.
There should be records of heroes discovering significant treasures, too.”

…I bought a book about heroes.
I haven’t read it yet because I went straight into the dungeon, but maybe it has information about the dungeon… I’ll rest after this and check the book.

Before that, let’s search every nook and cranny of the room.
Finding treasure is fundamental in dungeons, but I was too preoccupied with how to harass the guild master and forgot about it.

In RPGs, you usually open all the treasure chests before facing the boss, but… if I struggled to find treasure in a marsh or ruins and only found herbs or something, I’m confident I’d get angry.
I might be better off feeling happy when I encounter treasure and moving on.

“Sylphy, is it okay to rest in the boss room?”

“Hmm, I’m not sure.
I don’t know what might happen, so it might be safer to move on and rest in a wide area of the cave.”

In novels, the boss room becomes a safe zone until you leave… but it might not be the case for this dungeon.
Since Sylphy and the others are keeping watch, it should be safe to rest in the cave.
I’ll find a safe spot and get some reading done.
