Completion of the Fountain
———————————
I asked Silphy to fly me to the nearby rocky mountain.
I carved out a large rock for residential purpose and quickly finished my own room.
It’s a bit of a shortcut, but since it’s just a temporary dwelling, it’s not a problem.
The next step is to build a fountain… no, before that, I should go check if Sara and the others are napping properly.
Returning to the mobile base, I peek into the bedroom and find Sara, Marco, and Kika peacefully sleeping on straw beds.
It seems there’s no issue.
Perhaps Bell took care of it, as a gentle breeze is flowing through the room.
That should at least make the heat more bearable.
Feeling relieved, I step outside and notice a tornado in the distance.
“Hey, Silphy.
That’s Bell and the others’ magic, right?”
It’s hard to determine since it’s a place where natural tornadoes could occur.
“Yes.
they should have taught magic to Fukuchan and Uri… They seem to be playing inside the tornado.
It seems they’re having fun, don’t you think?”
Playing, huh? Well, as long as there’s no danger… or is there? As I approach the tornado, I see Bell and the others swirling around in the wind, laughing joyfully.
Fukuchan and Uri are also joining in the fun.
Well, if they’re getting along, then it’s fine, I guess? Bell and the others notice that I’m absentmindedly watching them and jump out of the tornado.
“Yuta, Bell! We taught lots of magic!” “KyuKyu” “Turu did their best!” “Kuu!”
They cling to my head, arms, and chest, eager to report their efforts.
I suppose this means they want me to praise them.
“You taught magic well.
Thank you.”
I praise them and continue to stroke their heads… Wait, why are Fukuchan and Uri also mixed in? Is it because they worked hard and want to be praised too? Well, whatever.
For now, I’ll just keep stroking them as much as they want.
It’s a reward for me as well.
After playing around for a while and satisfying their desires, I ask them about the magic they learned.
They say they’ve learned all the basic spells.
When I have Fukuchan and Uri demonstrate the power of their magic, Silphy approves, saying it’s sufficient to deal with zombies and skeletons.
This means leveling up at night won’t be a problem anymore.
I tell Bell and the others to keep playing until Sara and the others wake up, then I bid them farewell with a wave.
Now, should I build the fountain or ask Dyne for some advice?
“Dyne, can I ask you something?”
“Oh, Yuta-chan.
What is it?”
“I’m going to make a fountain, but I’m not sure if it should have a single large stream of water or multiple smaller ones.
By the way, regardless of the choice, I won’t be able to create any mechanisms, so it would be up to you to supply the water.”
Let’s just forget about utilizing height differences or applying pressure to the water from the beginning.
I don’t have the determination to experiment and create a fountain using those methods, no matter how convenient the tools are.
“Onee chan prefers having water come out from various places.
Leave it to Onee chan to supply the water.”
Dyne taps her chest with her right hand.
Bell and the others must have learned that gesture.
I’m briefly captivated by the bouncing object, but I quickly avert my gaze as Silphy gives me a scary look.
“Got it.
Anything else?”
Asking was a mistake.
A torrent of requests flows through my ears.
I initially listened earnestly, but I gave up halfway through.
Does Dyne think of me as a genius architect or something?
“I know I can’t do most of it, but I’ll do my best in my own way.”
That’s all I say before quickly moving away from Dyne.
If I had stayed, she might have suggested building a whole castle just for the fountain.
The way she gestures and behaves is so similar to Bell, it reflects her unfortunate maturity level.
“Hey, Silphy.
Do you think Dyne will be satisfied even though I can’t fulfill most of her requests?”
“That girl is easily swayed by the atmosphere.
Just insist that it’s a masterpiece.
It’s pointless to think too deeply about it.”
Hmm… so it depends on Dyne’s mood.
Silphy’s troubled expression suggests that she has struggled with Dyne’s mood-based actions before.
I’m a bit concerned that I might become the target of that struggle if I form a contract with her.
Her appearance is just my type.
Well, the receptionist at the Adventurers Guild, Eltina-san, and the general goods store owner, Marie-san, are also my type… but Eltina-san despises me like a snake and scorpion, and Marie-san is a penny-pincher, or something like that…
I want to meet someone.
I earnestly long for a meeting.
It’s a problem that goes beyond having a harem.
I feel a sense of sorrow that the typical event where a princess appears after saving a carriage under attack didn’t happen, despite the template being in place at the Adventurers Guild.
“Yuta, what’s wrong?”
“Huh? It’s nothing.
I was just thinking about how to make the fountain.”
Silphy is also a cool beauty, and her appearance is undeniable.
She’s kind and has helped me a lot.
But occasionally, I catch glimpses of her hedonistic, or rather… well… it’s like she thinks that as long as it’s interesting, most things are not a problem.
It’s a bit scary.
“Yuta, are you thinking about something inappropriate?”
Silphy looks at me suspiciously… Let’s just focus on making the fountain and not think about unnecessary things.
It’s still another world, and there are plenty of opportunities to meet beautiful women.
Now, I’ll concentrate on the fountain.
“I haven’t thought about it.
But since the general direction is decided, I’ll start making it.
Oh, I’d be embarrassed if someone sees me making the fountain, so please take me to the base by the sea.”
“Sure, but why would it be embarrassing?”
“Yeah, I lack confidence.
Besides, if I make it here, Dyne is likely to barge in.”
“Oh, there’s no doubt about that.”
When Silphy looked in the direction, yep, Dyne was peeking.
She’s definitely planning to meddle once I start creating.
“Silphy, please.”
“Alright, let’s go.”
I asked Silphy to envelop me in a cocoon of wind, and we flew towards the seaside house.
It takes time to walk, but with Silphy taking me there, it only takes a few minutes.
Flying is really convenient.
I feel like I heard Dyne’s voice, but it must be my imagination.
We arrived at the seaside base quickly.
I should just make the fountain quickly.
I also need to level up tonight.
First, I need to extend the pipes coming out of the well.
I took out rocks and a hand auger, and created the same type of pipe as the one buried in the well.
I feel like water might leak from the connection between the rock pipe and the pipe in the well, so I’ll leave that to Dyne.
She’s a great spirit, so it should be fine.
Come to think of it, since she’s a great spirit, she should be able to control water freely without making a fountain… I hope she didn’t force me to make a fountain by narrowing down the conditions.
Let’s not question it, as it would be disappointing if that was the real reason.
Let’s assume there’s some important reason that can’t be helped.
It’s easier on the mind that way.
Next… I’ll create recesses in the large rock that perfectly fit the pipes below.
From the top, I’ll carve out cylindrical rocks with radii of twenty-five centimeters, fifty centimeters, and one meter to prevent them from breaking.
A height of one meter should be enough for all of them.
These cylindrical rocks will be stacked in three tiers, reaching a height of three meters.
It looks like a splendid fountain.
Since I’m carving them from a single rock, there’s no need to worry about water leakage.
Next, I want each tier to have recesses for water to accumulate.
A depth of thirty centimeters should be enough.
I’m concerned about the strength if I dig too deep.
Magic saw.
Magic chisel.
Using a magic plane, I create concave grooves while leaving rocks in the areas where I want water to flow, aiming for a smooth surface as much as possible.
I thought about it when building the room, but it’s amazing how the rocks can be shaved like peeling a thin skin.
…With this, the rough shape is complete.
All that’s left is to drill holes with a hand auger in the desired spots for the water to come out.
The top section should have a wider flow.
So, I’ll drill a hole with a diameter of about three centimeters right in the middle, and in the section below, I’ll use a hand auger to create evenly spaced one-centimeter holes in the ring-shaped rock I left in the center of the concave groove, as I’m concerned about its strength.
However, the fountain is three meters tall, and the hand auger isn’t long enough to reach the center hole, which made me quite anxious.
In the end, I managed to solve it by having Sylphy lift the rock with the wind, allowing me to drill the hole in the center from both the top and the bottom with the hand auger.
I trust Sylphy’s power, but it was a little scary to drill a hole from under a large floating rock with the wind.
I thought about turning the fountain sideways, but I felt like it might snap in half, so I decided against it.
It’s not wise to be reckless without doing any strength calculations.
“Sylphy, it’s finished now.
What do you think?”
“Hmm.
It’s hard for me to say because I saw how hard Yuta worked on it… but it feels a bit plain.”
Upon hearing Sylphy’s words, I carefully inspected the fountain I had created.
…Indeed, it’s plain.
It’s of considerable size, but it’s just a block of rock without any decorations or patterns.
Certainly, it might not be impressive enough.
I recalled Dyne expressing her desires with gestures and excitement, so she must have had high expectations.
“Dyne won’t be satisfied… right?”
“That girl has been building up her expectations, so if we can’t do something a little more impressive, it’s going to be a hassle.”
She’s building up expectations on her own and raising the bar.
In that case, even if it’s difficult to create decorations, it seems like carving some patterns would be a good idea.
“Hmm, I see.
I’ll make some further adjustments.”
…Adding patterns to the fountain, huh? As someone who has never been praised for art since elementary school, I feel a sense of fear in a way.
Although my dexterity stat is high, artistic sense seems irrelevant, so I’m not sure what to do.
I’ve learned that when you lack artistic sense, the more you try to refine something, the more you run in a strange direction.
I can’t forget the sadness I felt when someone told me that the painting I put so much effort into was just a mess.
Without attempting anything too difficult, maybe I can add vertical lines at regular intervals to create shading, or carve in triangles to create some geometric patterns.
Which one should I choose…?
If I had talent for art, I could carve dragons or spirits into it.
But when I check my stats, as expected, there are no art-related skills.
Well, I already knew that.
Alright! Vertical lines it is.
Triangles have a high chance of ending up as a failure for me.
Remembering a somewhat sad past, I choose the safe option.
I suppose this is what it means to become an adult.
While savoring a subtle sense of melancholy, I carve vertical lines on the fountain.
I somehow manage to carve straight lines without any mistakes and finish the fountain.
Hmm, I feel like it has improved compared to doing nothing.
I guess this is my limit.
I should go show it to Dyne.
If she complains, I’ll pinch her cheeks in return.
