Jiang Mo Chen watched as the other man left, pleased with himself.
He unconsciously ducked his head and laughed.
He found Yan Qing Chi to be very peculiar.
Sometimes he was very mature and rational, yet other times he was quite naive and adorable.
Yan Qing Chi was like a big cat with drooping eyelids1—seemingly indifferent yet with his own territory and pride.

Yan Qing Chi took a quick shower and returned to the bed.
Jiang Mo Chen also went and took a shower.
Then he (JMC) turned off the lights and got under the blankets.

Yan Qing Chi had the habit of sleeping on the side with his back facing Jiang Mo Chen.
Jiang Mo Chen looked at the back of his head.
Suddenly, he found his conscience and laid his hand on the other man’s waist.
In a rare display of earnest attentiveness, he asked, “Is your waist sore?”

Yan Qing Chi was somewhat unaccustomed to this sudden earnest attentiveness of his, “What’s up with you?”

“I’m showing concern for you.”

“One who is unaccountably solicitous is up to no good!”

“I beg your pardon, I already was ‘up to no good’.”

“What if your lust is aroused again?”

Jiang Mo Chen smiled, “Then if I don’t do anything now, I will let down the heavy expectations you have of me!”

“Don’t, don’t, don’t.” Yan Qing Chi held him down, “You go ahead and massage it.”

Jiang Mo Chen silently massaged his waist.
As he did so, he criticized and lectured, “Can’t you think more favorably of me?”

“Next time.
Next time I will definitely think of you in a super good light, like male god-level.”

“That’s more like it.”

Jiang Mo Chen said, without saying anything else.
Yan Qing Chi also didn’t speak.
In the quiet night, the air was still for a while.

After a long while, Jiang Mo Chen opened his mouth to ask, “Today, at that time, were you scared? Afraid that I would be hurt?”

Yan Qing Chi didn’t answer.

Jiang Mo Chen called him.

Yan Qing Chi turned to look at him.
In the darkness, the two of them weren’t able to see the other clearly; however, they could make out each other’s outlines.
Jiang Mo Chen heard Yan Qing Chi ask him, “Are you asking me this because you want me to say I was?”

Jiang Mo Chen was silent.

Yan Qing Chi also fell silent.

It was quiet again in the room.

After some time, Yan Qing Chi turned his head back.
He said, “Sleep.”

” ”

Jiang Mo Chen made a sound of assent and continued to massage his (YQC) waist.

Yan Qing Chi didn’t stop him, nor did he say anything else.
He slowly closed his eyes.

Jiang Mo Chen was left there staring at the back of his (YQC) head, lightly massaging the other man’s waist as he asked himself whether he hoped that Yan Qing Chi would say he was afraid.
If so, then why?

Jiang Mo Chen didn’t want to dive too deep into that, and he didn’t dare to.
He could only skim  the surface and ask himself why he would ask Yan Qing Chi this question.
And what kind of answer did he want to hear if he did?

This answer was practically on the verge of being revealed yet it was tamped down by him.
He looked at Yan Qing Chi and quietly, silently, pressed up close to the latter from behind.

The next day, at around seven o’clock in the morning, Yan Qing Chi groggily opened his eyes.
He was about to get up when he heard Jiang Mo Chen say, “You don’t have any scenes today, what are you waking up so early for? There’s no area for you to do your morning run.”

When Yan Qing Chi heard his words, he thought that what Jiang Mo Chen said was quite reasonable.
So, he closed his eyes and went back to sleep.

When he woke up again, it was already eleven o’clock in the morning.
Yan Qing Chi looked back to see Jiang Mo Chen playing on his phone.

“You’re awake?” he asked.

Yan Qing Chi grunted.

“Then I’ll call for breakfast.” Jiang Mo Chen said, and he called the front desk’s room service number.

Yan Qing Chi lifted the blanket and got off the bed to wash up.

Soon, the hotel staff delivered breakfast.

Yan Qing Chi took advantage of the time they ate breakfast to swipe Weibo.
When he did so, he saw that because yesterday’s matter didn’t have marketing accounts following up on it—only the fans’ passionate comments—it had dropped from the trending list2.
However, he had gained many fans even if the majority of these new fans were Jiang Mo Chen’s ‘Little Houses’.

Jiang Mo Chen saw the Weibo page on the screen of his phone and explained, “I don’t really want this matter to spread, so I had Wu Yuan suppress the news.
Oh, Wu Yuan is my manager.
Thus, this wave of attention of yours will also end here.
However, if we used this matter to overhype you, then that wouldn’t be very appropriate.
It would be too obvious that you were hyped.
My fans’ feelings towards you would most likely then change from thanking you to being uncomfortable with you.”

“Don’t worry.
I don’t understand these things, so do whatever you guys think is appropriate.”

Jiang Mo Chen nodded.

Yan Qing Chi asked, “Why do some people call your fans ‘Little Lunatics’ (Xiao Feng Zi)? Aren’t they ‘Little Houses’ (Xiao Fang Zi)?”

Jiang Mo Chen paused for a moment, “Do you know that there is another appellation other than fandom names and pet names?”

“What?”

“Hate name3.”

Yan Qing Chi cried out “Ah?” in surprise.

Jiang Mo Chen looked at him helplessly, “When you have fans in the future, your fans will also have a corresponding fandom name and a hate name.
And when you’re popular, that will be the time you get a hate name.”

“Do you have a hate name?” Yan Qing Chi asked him.

Jiang Mo Chen was speechless, “You already know it.”

“But I’m curious.”

“If you have time to be curious about this, you might as well think about what to call your fans.”

Yan Qing Chi leaned on his hand and mused, “It has to be related to my name, right?”

“‘Little Swallow(s)’4?” Jiang Mo Chen asked.

Yan Qing Chi was pretty much instantly reminded of a certain female character who had once been popular all over China5 before he had transmigrated, “No.”

“‘Green Grass’6?”

“Anything else?”

“‘Pond’7? ”

Yan Qing Chi answered, “……I guess ‘Green Grass’ works.”

“Or ‘Clear Dew’ 8? Oh, right.
‘Oats’9.
This one could work.”

Yan Qing Chi pondered over it and also thought it was okay.
He picked up a bun with his chopsticks and handed it to Jiang Mo Chen, “I bestow upon you this reward.”

Jiang Mo Chen looked at the bun in his plate and then at him, helpless.

It was at this time that his (JMC) phone rang.
Jiang Mo Chen picked it up and glanced at it to see a red dot appear on Yuan Ming Xu’s icon in WeChat.
Even if he didn’t open it, he could see the words displayed inside: 【I’m back.
Let’s meet up in the afternoon.】

Jiang Mo Chen was taken aback.
He opened the chat and answered:【Let’s not.
I have to film for the movie in the afternoon.】

【What about tomorrow?】Yuan Ming Xu instantly replied.

【I’m busy with this movie for the near future.】

【No matter how busy you are, you could still find some time, couldn’t you? Or could it be…you don’t want to meet me?】Yuan Ming Xu asked.
【Now that you’re married, are you not able to even meet me, your friend?】

Jiang Mo Chen stared at this message and didn’t respond.

【Forget it then.
I won’t make things difficult for you.
Then we won’t meet.
I’ll go home tomorrow.】

Only then did Jiang Mo Chen recall that Yuan Ming Xu was still in this city.
The reason why the other man had chosen to land in this city was simply because of him.

He unconsciously sighed and replied:  【Tomorrow then.
Tomorrow afternoon, we’ll meet.】

“It’s just a meet-up.
Nothing will happen,” Jiang Mo Chen thought.
After all, before Yuan Ming Xu left, before he and Yan Qing Chi got married, they (JMC & YMX) were still friends.
Besides, some things needed to be cleared up face-to-face.

Seeing him finally set down his phone, Yan Qing Chi asked him, “What is it? Is it urgent? You have a solemn expression on your face.”

Jiang Mo Chen opened his mouth, the sentence “Yuan Ming Xu has returned, I’m going to go meet him” at the tip of his tongue and swallowed back down.
It was only until now that he realized—he hadn’t ever told Yan Qing Chi about the situation between him and Yuan Ming Xu.
The only impression Yan Qing Chi had of Yuan Ming Xu was at the gathering last time when Liao Si Bo had mentioned the latter by chance.
So he didn’t know whether Yan Qing Chi knew if he used to like Yuan Ming Xu before or not.
However, he knew very clearly that he didn’t want to bring up Yuan Ming Xu at this time; and he didn’t want to see the expression Yan Qing Chi would make after he (YQC) learned about his (JMC) matter with Yuan Ming Xu.

He didn’t want to see Yan Qing Chi be too conscious of this matter; at the same time, he didn’t want to see Yan Qing Chi be completely unaffected by it either.
Then, what did he (JMC) want his (YQC) reaction to be? Jiang Mo Chen had no idea.
Just like how last night, he didn’t know whether he wanted Yan Qing Chi to be scared or not.

“I’m going to meet a friend,” he said.
“Since I need to adjust my schedule, I considered it somewhat of a hassle.”

Yan Qing Chi nodded, “Do we need to treat them to a meal?” he asked, “Last time when Liao Si Bo came to meet you, we treated him to a meal.”

“No need.
Liao Si Bo came to visit me at work, but he’s (YMX – JMC’s friend) not.
It’s fine if I go by myself.”

“Okay.” Yan Qing Chi said as he continued to focus on eating his breakfast.

As Jiang Mo Chen watched him, he suddenly discovered that the other man seemed to always have maintained a sense of balance between advancing and retreating.
He (YQC) would joke around with him (JMC), be close, and flirt; yet at the same time, he wouldn’t ask any further questions, wouldn’t ask him which friend it was, wouldn’t ask him why.

The familiarity which he (YQC) exhibited were only within the little circle of him (JMC) and Qi Qi.
As for everything else outside of the circle, he (YQC) wouldn’t pursue the matter nor would he say anything else.
Jiang Mo Chen suddenly felt like he couldn’t quite figure Yan Qing Chi out.
He couldn’t figure out if the other man had a sense of propriety or if he (YQC) didn’t care at all about him (JMC).

More than that though, he couldn’t figure out why he would suddenly care about Yan Qing Chi’s attitude.
A self-deprecating smile formed on Jiang Mo Chen’s face and he didn’t say anything else.

That afternoon, Jiang Mo Chen coordinated his schedule with the director.
The next day, he filmed in the morning and then directly left.

Yuan Ming Xu sat on a chair next to the window.
The sun shone into the private booth, giving the table before him a bright pomelo-colored coating.
He looked at the lemon slice in his cup, his mood somewhat sullen.

This was one of his friend’s stores.
Its decoration was very hipster-like.
It was extremely popular with the girls.
But today, there was not a single person to be seen in the store.
This was because of his arrival, moreso Jiang Mo Chen’s imminent arrival.

Yuan Ming Xu never would have thought that he had merely gone on a trip abroad and when he came back, Jiang Mo Chen had already gotten married with someone else.
He was quite surprised, but more so he didn’t quite want to believe it.

Of course he knew that Jiang Mo Chen liked him.
He (JMC) had helped him so much, even blatantly conveying his affections.
But he (YMX) had liked Zhou Yi Xing for too long, so he chose to turn a blind eye to the other man’s feelings.
Yet every time he was hurt by Zhou Yi Xing, he would habitually seek Jiang Mo Chen out for consolation.
The three of them were like three single-headed arrows on a straight line.
He looked at Zhou Yi Xing, and Jiang Mo Chen looked at him.
He had already grown used to this kind of relationship.
And yet, now, Jiang Mo Chen got married.

Yuan Ming Xu thought that he didn’t care that much about it.
After all, the one he liked was Zhou Yi Xing.
However, the distance that Jiang Mo Chen was putting between them was causing him to feel an increasing sense of panic.
Jiang Mo Chen no longer expressed his concern, no longer proactively struck up conversation with him, and even rebuffed his (YMX) WeChat messages when he (YMX) wanted to talk with him, saying he was busy.

What was ‘busy’? It was the most perfunctory excuse.
As long as one was willing to, no matter how busy they were, they would make time—unless they weren’t the least bit willing.

He couldn’t understand.
It was just a marriage.
Why did everything change? Even if Jiang Mo Chen’s spouse knew the matter between them (JMC & YMX)—even if the other party minded and didn’t want them to interact with each other—what was wrong about sending a WeChat message and having a chat?

Yuan Ming Xu was already too used to relying on Jiang Mo Chen.
He was used to venting to the other man about his situation and being consoled.
But now, Jiang Mo Chen ended this in a one-sided manner.
This disquieted Yuan Ming Xu and made him miserable.
Hence, he bought a plane ticket and returned to the country prematurely.
He wanted to know just what on earth had happened between them.

The author has something to say:

Jiang Mo Chen (with a very strong will to live): “I’m just going to make things clear to him, trust me!”
Yan Qing Chi (cold smile): “This is your reason for keeping this from me?”
Jiang Mo Chen: “I was wrong.”
Yan Qing Chi: “Hmph.”

Jiang Mo Chen kept this matter from Yan Qing Chi because he vaguely noticed that he was beginning to care about Yan Qing Chi, but he also wasn’t sure.
So, he subconsciously avoided it.
However, lying is one of the major taboos in love, so Yan Qing Chi will teach him a lesson.
Don’t worry, the Little White Lotus won’t get a chance, nor will it be angsty.
On the contrary, there will be an unexpected ‘distribution of candy’/public display of affection.

Footnotes

“耷拉着眼皮”- literally “drooping eyelids”.
I thought of it as YQC being compared to a big cat looking at JMC with half-asleep eyes.
Visual example: .
As for the “drooping eyelids”, I imagined it as the kind of “drooping eyelids” where your eyelids feel heavy and you are sleepy.Trending list = hot search.
To be more accurate, the original said the “heat of the matter had subsided” which meant that things had calmed down (as compared to before).
So now things are winding down; the netizens and fans have moved onto other things.
I decided to translate it as “dropping from the trending list” to show that.I couldn’t find a term for it (the raw was “黒称”), but as can be understood from their previous dialogue, it’s a malicious twist on JMC’s fandom name.
So from ‘Little Houses’ (Xiao Fang Zi 小房子) to ‘Little Lunatics’ (Xiao Feng Zi 小疯子).
This is what the antifans/haters refer to JMC’s fans by.小燕子 (Xiao Yan Zi) has the Yan (燕) in Yan Qing Chi’s name (燕清池)Little Swallow (小燕子 Xiao Yan Zi) is the heroine of My Fair Princess (还珠格格 Huán Zhū Gége), a hit 1998–1999 historical drama.Green Grass = 青草 (Qing Chao) – the Qing in YQC.
It’s not the same character (青 vs 清, YQC’s “Qing” has a water radical which usually makes the Chinese character related to water–but not always) but it’s pronounced the same and is close in meaning (I think).Pond = 池塘 (Chi Tang) – the Chi in YQC This one actually has the same character: 清 (Qing).
If you want to see the Chinese of “Clear Dew”, it’s 清露 (Qing Lu).
Oats = 燕麦 (Yan Mai).
This is the same Yan as YQC’s name.
